CLIENT: National Trust for Scotland

This project involved the careful restoration of the roof on a historically significant property in Culross, Fife, Scotland.

As a Category B listed building, the works required meticulous attention to detail and adherence to heritage standards.

scope of works

  • Complete retiling of the roof using traditional materials to preserve the building’s character.
  • Replacement of lead work to ensure long-term durability and weatherproofing.
  • Installation of new cast iron guttering, maintaining the period-appropriate aesthetic.
  • Repair and replacement of rotten timbers, restoring structural integrity while respecting original craftsmanship.

Challenges And solutions:

  • Limited Working Space: The site offered very restricted access, requiring careful planning to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • High Foot Traffic: Located beside Culross Palace, a popular visitor attraction, the site experienced hundreds of tourists daily. We implemented strict safety measures, including clear signage, barriers, and scheduled deliveries outside peak visitor hours to minimize disruption.
